YuTu Social is a UK social network aimed at bringing together young adults, (college and university students)  in person in their communities and on their university campuses.

My role:

I participate in the YuTu App Design project as UI/UX designer,
the member of design team.

I was directly involved in:

- Competitive analysis
- Creating Persona
- Journey Map
- User flow
- Wireframe
- Prototyping
- User Testing

Main Goals:

Objective: Redesign the app to prioritize the marketplace feature

The specific task of our design team: UX/UI design of the Marketplace.
Profile flow and Navigation design.

The target market is 18-26 y/o university students.

Discovery and User Research

Discovery

Sifted through user interviews, marketing research to narrow down the focus of business needs and user needs

We received from the client a collective of raw user interview responses and market research study. After sifting through the research, we created an affinity map to map out what users thought of the app. Looked over wireframes and identified key redesign areas. Took our analysis back to the client and prioritized features together by aligning business goals and user needs.

Direct competitors

Poshmark

eBay

Facebook Marketplace

Instagram Shopping

Indirect competitors

Twitch

Patreon

Upwork

How do competitors...

Create a seamless shopping experience for users

Integrate a bidding system into purchasing services/items

Encourage communication between sellers and buyers

From the competitive analysis, we wanted to draw inspiration for user flows, features, and visuals.
Direct competitors, Poshmark, eBay, Facebook Marketplace, and Instagram Shopping, gave us insight into UI design patterns that we can directly use in the redesign.
Indirect Competitors, Patreon, Twitch, and Upwork, gave us insight into ways that video sharing can build community and ideas for alternative ways to purchase service.

User Persona

It was imperative that we designed with the primary user persona in mind so that we could cater the design decisions toward actual users of the product.
The primary user, Amy is looking to give guitar lessons to make extra income as well as connect with more people who have a passion for guitars.
She wants to set her own prices, and make new friends.

Journey Map - Buyer & Seller

With the purpose of visualization process that a person goes through in order to accomplish a goal and based on our User Persona
and previous research, we created a Customer Journey Map for Buyer and Seller.

User Flow

Since a priority task for us was to create a marketplace design inside the app,
we focused on creating a buyer and seller user flow including the offer (bidding) process.

Usability Testing

The usability test consisted of conducting approx 30-minute testing sessions with 5 students that fit YuTU’s target user demographic. Then we collected our notes and synthesized our findings with affinity maps

5 Users, 30-minute sessions per user 50 + sticky notes later...

What Next

I really enjoyed this project and working with the team. It is so exciting to participate in the creation and development of such a great product as YuTu.

The next step in continuing the project may be to pay some attention to the compliance of the app with accessibility standards.

Testing share button capabilities - what would be sharing a post encompass? How would this impact user retention and acquisition?

Adding tutorials for circles and video listing - play the first time a feature is used and can be accessed again under a help button.

Consider Offer flow time limits - decide on a limit for how long an offer is available, or allow users to set a time.
